WASHINGTON, D.C. - Loyola's men's and women's swimming and diving teams used multiple-victory days from male swimmer Marko Turcinov and female swimmers Nori Skoda and Megan Sterback en route to defeating Georgetown's men's team 136.50-104.50 and the Hoya women's team 130-113 on Saturday afternoon at the Hoyas' McCarthy pool.
"This was a great win for both the men and women. We put extra effort in this week preparing for a close meet," said Loyola head coach Brian Loeffler, whose Greyhounds defeated Georgetown for the first time in four years. "I am excited to see school records and other top-five times achieved this early in the season. [The win] will be an excellent springboard for the remainder of the season."
Some of those fast times Loeffler spoke of were recorded by the junior Turcinov, who won three events on the day. Turcinov took the 200 Free, the 500 Free, and the 100 Fly where he set the McCarthy Pool Record and posted his second fastest 100 Fly time ever when he touched the wall at 50.84 seconds.
Greyhound freshman Ryan Reeser was the other multiple event winner for Loyola's men's squad with his triumphs in the 50 Free (21.97), where he recorded the fifth-fastest time in Loyola history, and the 100 Free (47.96), where he recorded the sixth-fastest time in Loyola history. Senior co-captain Chris Berger also made a nice contribution to the Greyhound effort by tallying some key points in the day's first two events when he won the 1,000 Free and finished third in the 200 Free.
Skoda, a freshman, led Loyola's women's campaign with wins in the 200 IM (2:14.70), where she posted the second-fastest time in school history, and the 100 Breast (1:08.64), where she recorded the third-fastest time in school history. Skoda also took second in the 100 Fly behind teammate Michelle Ryan, whose winning time of 1:10.93 is the fifth-best in school history.
Freshman Megan Sterback was the other double winner for the Greyhound women with wins at 1-meter and 3-meter diving, while sophomore Chelsea Brace set Loyola's school record in the 100 Back with her time of 1:01.06.
