Men's Swimming & Diving Records Best Finish At Patriot League Championships

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Loyola University Maryland sophomore Ben Cono picked up his second medal in as many days of the Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships at Navy’s Lejeune Hall Saturday to lead the Loyola University Maryland men's team to a fifth place finish, its best-ever showing at the League Championships.

Cono finished second in the 200 breaststroke and broke his own school record with his NCAA B standard time of 1:55.48.

On the women’s side, Theresa McKallen just missed breaking the school record in the 200 breast, finishing 12th in 2:21.53, one hundredth of a second shy of Noelle Staib’s program record of 2:21.52 from 2014.

Courtney Kenyon and John Callaghan joined Cono and McKallen in the finals of the 200 breast, with Kenyon taking 14th on the women’s side in 2:22.55 and Callaghan finishing 11th in the men’s B final with a time of 2:03.96.

In diving, Lindsey Staszewski finished seventh overall with a score of 239.95 and Maggie Garrahan was ninth, checking in with a mark of 236.75.

North Woods started the evening session for the Greyhounds with an eighth-place finish in the 1650 free, followed by GJ Apostle, who took 16th with a time of 16:22.08.

In the 200 back, Zeke Wolfgang touched 11th in 1:51.38 and Alec Sperandio finished 13th in 1:52.85.

Rich Mueller followed that up with an 11th-place finish in the 100 free in 45.64.

In the 200 fly, Maddie Myers took 16th, clocking in at 2:08.58.

In the 400 free relay, Loyola’s women’s team of Gabrielle Clarkson, Tara Mulligan, Maddie Myers and Cara Egan finished eighth with a time of 3:32.41, while the men’s squad of Ruslan Kopunek, Rich Mueller, Ben Cono and Madison Hardimon combined for a sixth-place finish and a time of 3:01.71.

As a team, the Greyhounds’ men finished fifth with 300.5 points, their best-ever showing, while the women’s team finished seventh with 187 points.
