Philadelphia, Pa. - The Loyola men's and women's crew teams raced several boats in weekend regattas on the Schuykill River in Philadelphia, Pa. The Greyhounds posted a number of successful results, highlighted by the women's victory in Sunday's Novice 8.
On Saturday at the Frostbite Regatta, the `Hounds registered a pair of runner-up finishes in men's competition. The Varsity 4 rowed to time of 6:59.67 to place second behind Penn State while the men's Novice 8 boat finished second behind St. Joseph's with a time of 7:37.35. The Hawks won the race in 7:01.76.
Loyola's men's Varsity 8 ended up fourth in the final while the women's Varsity 4 took fifth at the Frostbite. On the Novice side, the Greyhounds had a pair of third-place finishes with the women's Novice 8 beating out strong LaSalle and Penn State crews. The men's Novice 4 was also third while the women's Novice 4 finished fifth.
Sunday's Bill Braxton Regatta included Loyola's first-place finish in the women's Novice 8 race. The Greyhounds, stroked by freshman Kelly McDermott, clocked a time of 5:06.66 in the victory.
The men's Varsity 4, led by senior Tom Scida, also posted a great finish at the Bill Braxton with their third-place showing. The boat registered a time of 4:53.22, only 2.1 seconds out of first place.
The Greyhounds are done with fall competition and resume their season with the Jesuit Invitational on March 17.
