The NCAA Division I Championship/Sports Management Cabinet has announced that starting in 2011 they will permit the Women's Rowing Committee to grant automatic qualification into the championship.
The MAAC will be eligible for an automatic bid starting in 2012.
"I was very happy to hear that the AQ was granted to the womens rowing commitee and to learn that the MAAC will be eligible for AQ in 2 short years," said rowing head coach Al Ramirez. "It is very exciting to think that Loyola Women's Rowing could be eligible for a play-in competition to the NCAA tournament."
The Loyola women's rowing team won the 2009 MAAC Championship after posting wins in the Women's Pair, Novice 4, LW4, JV4 and the Varsity 4. They finished second in the Varsity 8 and the Novice 8. Head Coach Al Ramirez was also selected as the conference's coach of the year for a third time.
Loyola opens its 2009-2010 women's rowing schedule Saturday, October 10 on the Schuykill River in Philadelphia, Pa. The Schuylkill River is very popular with watersports enthusiasts. The Dad Vail Regatta, the largest intercollegiate rowing event in the nation, is held on the river near Boathouse Row, as is the annual Bayada Regatta, featuring disabled rowers from all over the continent.
