Rowing Makes The MAAC All-Academic Team Roster

April 26, 2013

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Four members of the Loyola University Maryland rowing team earned a spot on the 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rowing All-Academic Team, as announced by the conference office Friday evening.

Bryan Carney, Michael Skopelitis, Kathleen Sweeney, and Filip Zigic, received recognition for their efforts in the classroom and on the water.

Carney, a member of the men's varsity four boat, helped the Greyhounds to two final appearances throughout the regular season. The sophomore led the crew to a sixth place finish in the petite finals of the Knecht cup, as well as fifth in the finals at the Kerr Cup on the Cooper River. Carney and the men's varsity four received MAAC boat of the week honors on April 16, after the strong performance at the Knecht Regatta.

This season, Skopelitis and Zigic also turned in strong performances in the men's varsity "b" boat and men's lightweight four.

On the women's side, Sweeney, senior captain of the women's team, has been versatile on the water. The senior was a member of the women's varsity four boat that received MAA boat of the week honors, after a second place finish at the Murphy Cup Regatta. The following weeks, Sweeney paired with Shannon Connelly, to race in the women's pair for the remainder of the season.

To be eligible for the honor, student-athletes must finish two semesters of schooling, while holding a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.

The Greyhounds will compete in the 2013 MAAC Championships Saturday, on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
