This Fall, the Varsity Men’s and Women’s Crew Teams participated in the Head of the Charles Regatta, Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, and the Frostbite Regatta. The fall was a good start to the year and allowed the rowers to race in many new events.
After securing an automatic bid in 2010, the women’s team was able to go to the Head of the Charles in a varsity women’s four. On a beautiful fall Boston day, the girls raced down the Charles, placing 18th out of 46 boats, securing a bid for next year’s race.
The second regatta of the season was HOSR. The day was filled with wind, freezing rain, and snow. Chris Golon (’12) raced the single, the first Loyola student to do so. Although facing harsh weather and rowing as a lightweight in an open event, he was able to secure 15th. In addition, the women’s four raced in a new line-up, finishing 25th out of 38 boats. Unfortunately, the lightweight women’s double and men’s double races were cancelled due to worsening weather. Despite the conditions, dedicated parents came to support the rowers and grille burgers, and alumna Liz Staub (’10) stopped by after her races.
The season ended with a weekend at the Frostbite Regatta. The women raced a varsity four and two doubles, while the men raced two doubles. After a fall of practicing small boats, the rowers were eager to race in the double events. The men’s boats came in fourth and fifth, and the women’s four took 4th while the doubles took 4th and 5th. For a team with many young rowers and new scullers, the day was both challenging and exciting, but the squad is definitely ready for Spring Racing!
