Philadelphia, Pa. - The Loyola rowing program had eight boats racing at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa., Saturday afternoon. The novice team made its season debut, with both the men's and women's fours taking third in their respective races.
The first race the Greyhounds competed in was the Men's Novice Four, and the crew finished the three mile course in 17:28.1767., placing third of 16. Just outdoing Loyola was Army and Temple. The women's novice four placed third of 12, covering the course in 20:10.4367, just behind Penn and Army.
The men's novice eight placed 21 of 29, outpulling Bucknell down the home stretch by .59 seconds. The women's eight clocked in at 18:39.84, good for 15th out of 29 boats.
On the varsity side, the men's four placed 18th of 32, while the women took 8th of 22. The men completed the race in 16:36.24, while the women did so in 18:28.1033.The men's four consisted of coxswain Thomas Quinn, Nick Miano, Thomas Kelly, Maciej Owsianny and Ryan Walsh. The women, who were coxed by Katherine Griffin, cosisted of Kelly McDermott, Leslie Ann Perez, Helen O'Connell and Catriona Miller.
The men's varsity eight finished in the second-third of crews, placing 18th of 30 in 14:33.2933. (Thomas Quinn, Maciej Owsianny, Ryan Jordan, Ryan Walsh, Michael Faust, Marc Hesse, Nick Miano, Jordan Mastera and Thomas Kelly).
The women's varsity eight competed in the highly competitive heavyweight eight and placed 14th of 19 in 15:56.2767. (Kelly McDermott, Sheila Marsicovetere, Leslie Ann Perez, Margaret Ajello, Daisy Carter, Elizabeth Staub, Julianne Roccuzzo and Kimberly Winiarczyk).
The rowing program will be back in the water next Saturday, when they travel to the DC area for the Head of the Occoquan Regatta, located on the Occoquan River in Fairfax, Va.
