Oct. 13, 2007

Philadelphia, Pa. - Both of Loyola's men's and women's crew teams opened the Fall 2007 season in impressive fashion at the Navy Day Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa. Led by the women's varsity four, the `Hounds, racing in five categories, received solid results they hope to build upon.

The women's varsity four raced twice on the day, competing in the Women's College 4+ and the Women's Club 4+. In both races, the crew of Nicole Yaeger, Megan Thompson, Daisy Carter, and Elizabeth Staub posted solid results. In the College 4+, the crew took ninth out of 15 boats with a time of 17:48.50, loosing to winner U Penn, which rowed the course with a time of 16.48.00. The crew also lost to eight-place St. Joe's by just 0.4 seconds, while beating U Penn B, Villanova B, Army, La Salle, and Rutgers-Camden.

In the Club 4+, the four braved windier conditions to win the event with a time of 18:53.50. Lafayette was the closest boat to the Greyhounds with a time of 20:38.10, while U.S.M.M.A took third with a time of 20:43.70.

"We are very excited about our results today," said Drennan, the senior co-captain. "These four rowed well together and they were able to produce a win. The success of the women's crew will depend on the leadership of these four women."

Also producing successful results for the team was the men's Varsity 8 crew of Devin Marsicovetere, Jack Vitanovec, Nick Miano, Marc Hess, Cody Kishur, Dan Reardon, Dennis Delany, Zach Reichenbach, and Laura Fischer.

In the last race of the day for the `Hounds, the MV8+ took 2nd in the Men's Dad Vail 8+ category with a time of 14:20.20. While loosing to first-place St. Joe's, which rowed the course with a time of 13:57.30, the crew edged out Lehigh by just 2.1 seconds, while also beating crews from U.S.M.M.A, Philadelphia U, and Drexel.

"This crew faces the challenge of replacing a strong senior class," said the senior Reardon, who has rowed in the MV8+ since his freshman year."The previous seniors have set examples on how this team should be led, and Zach and I look to follow in their footsteps and leave the 8 next May faster then it has ever been before."

Also racing for Coach Al Ramirez's team was the Men's Lightweight Varsity 8+, who raced in the tough category of the Men's Lightweight College Eight+. The crew of Matt Spalluzzi, Mike Mikula, John Searls, Tom Berkery, Alex Canale, Travis O'Neal, Dan Keenan, Josh Terini, and Rob Manning raced against very tough crews from Navy, Georgetown, and U Penn, rowing the course with a time of 15:13.40.

"While we took last in the competition, we lost to some of the best lightweight crews in the country," said senior captain Matt Spalluzzi. "We hope to model the work ethic of these crews and gain speed throughout the year."

Loyola also entered a crew in the Men's College Four +, in which they took 14th out of 18 boats with a time of 15:57.10. While the crew lost to first-place Navy, who raced with a time of 14:50.90, they were able to beat Lehigh, Philadelphia U, Washington College B, and Villanova.

"The coaching staff was very pleased with the effort that the crew put out today," said Ramirez. "We were not sure how competitive the team could be, but they came out and showed how hard they are working at practice. We hope to build on these results throughout the fall and into the spring."

The crew will return back to Philadelphia in two weeks to race at the Head of Schuylkill on October 27th.
