West Windsor, N.J. - The Men's Lightweight 4 won the gold medal at the US Rowing Collegiate Crew Championships Sunday afternoon at Mercer Lake. Loyola also medaled in both the Men's and Women's Open 4 boats in West Windsor. Every boat had advanced to Sunday's competition after heats on Saturday.
The foursome of Nick Miano, Thomas Kelly, Josh Tari and Christopher Golon won the lightweight 4 convincingly, defeating Fordham by 20 seconds on the 2,000m course. That race came just after Miano stroked the Open 4 to a silver medal, edging out MIT and falling just short of Fordham. Joining Miano in the Open 4 were coxswain Thomas Quinn, Ryan Walsh, Marc Hesse and Maciej Owsianny.
Also competing on the men's squad were two Pair boats with Hesse and Owsianny just missing out on the bronze, taking fourth in 8:06.93. Kelly and Tarini took fifth in the same race.
Kelly McDermott stroked the Open Four to a bronze medal against two of the nation's best crews (Duke and Villanova), and beat out Fordham by two seconds for third place. Joining McDermott were coxswain Katherine Griffin, Sheila Marsicovetere, Daisy Carter and Elizabeth Staub, the same gold-medal winning crew from the MAAC Championships.
The same four plus coxswain, as well as Leslie Ann Perez, Catriona Miller, Kimberly Winiarczyk and Julianne Roccuzzo formed the Varsity 8, which also took fourth on the day in 7:40, but managed to defeat Villanova and Tulsa.
The Greyhounds are back in the water June 3-5, when they will take part in the IRA National Championships on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
