Philadelphia, Pa. - The Women's Varsity 4 won the grand final, besting 25 other boats, highlighting the Loyola rowing team's afternoon at the Murphy Cup Saturday on the Schuylkill River. The Men's Varsity 8 took third in the petite final, while the Women's 8 took fifth in their petite final.
The Men's Varsity 8 finished in 6:22.6 as Nick Miano, Jordan Mastera, Michael Faust, Marc Hesse, Maciej Owsianny, Ryan Walsh, Josh Tarini, Christopher Golon and coxswain Thomas Quinn represented Loyola in the race.
The Women's Varsity 8 consisted of Kelly McDermott Sheila Marsicovetere, Daisy Carter, Leslie Ann Perez, Catriona Miller, Elizabeth Staub, Kimberly Winiarczyk, Julianna Roccuzzo and coxswain Katherine Griffin. The 8-boat finished in just over seven minutes.
While the Women's Novice 8 took fourth in 7:13.91, they were able to defeat Navy and George Washington, which says a lot for the first-year squad. Lauren Walsh coxed the boat of all freshman and was joined by Emily Ehmann, Kathleen Murphy, Alex Spark, Erin Mulhern, Susan O'Rourke, Kelsey Rohman, Alexandra Brozyna and Kim Seckler.
The Greyhounds are back in the water next weekend when they partake in the Knecht Cup Regatta April 10-11. The annual regatta, which features several elite crews, is held on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
