Three Second-Place Finishes For Rowing At The Murphy Cup

March 30, 2013

CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The Loyola University Maryland rowing teams came away with a strong finish at the Murphy Cup Regatta on the Cooper River.

“Overall I was pleased with the efforts of our young crew today,” said head coach Al Ramirez. “It’s not easy psychologically to go up against larger teams in small boat lineups with a young crew.”

The women’s pair took home the best finish.  Shannon Connelly and Kimberly Seckler raced in their first pair together, finishing with a time of 9:17.47. The pair came in ahead of Villanova.

The combination of Juan Cadavid and Paul Kalkbrenner in the men’s pair also posted a strong showing, qualifying for the final race, and finishing in 8:30.13.

The women’s varsity four boat of Andrea Almeida, Eleni Papadatos, Kathleen Sweeney, Clara Coleman, and cox Lindsay Superczynski had their best showing of the season. The quad finished second ahead of strong teams in George Mason, Drexel, and Williams.

The men’s four boat ended the race in fourth place. Coxswain Patrick Flynn led Joe Wawrzynski, Michael Blume, Walter Horan, and Bryan Carney across the finish in a time of 7:23.28

“I can see the potential in this crew. They had a strong early effort, but ultimately fell behind,” said Ramirez.

The women’s novice four boat had their best finish of the season, coming in behind Colgate with a time of 9:18.08.

Rounding out the races for the Greyhounds were the men’s lightweight four, which qualified for the finals, but finished the last race in fourth with a time of 7:36.88.

The team returns to action Sunday, April 7 in Fairfax, Va., for the Occoquan Sprints.
