Rowing Posts Three Victories At The Occoquan Sprints

Lorton, Va. - The men's and womens rowing teams battled strong winds and choppy water at the Occoquan Sprints, but managed to win three races and finished no lower than fifth in any of the nine finals they competed in Sunday afternoon.

Among the victorious for the Greyhounds were the women's varsity lightweight 4, who covered the course in 7:43.59. Sitting in the winning boat were Daisy Carter, Elizabeth Staub, Kimberly Winiarczyk and Catriona Miller

Also victorious was the men's novice 4 in 7:19.30 and the men's pair in 7:41.3.

Both the men's and women's varsity 8s took fifth in their respective races, with the men finishing in 5:59.37, just six seconds behind gold medal winning Lehigh. The women finished in 6:36.86, but had a solid victory over North Carolina.

The men's varsity 8 was coxed by Thomas Quinn and crewed by Nick Miano, Jordan Mastera, Michael Faust, Marc Hesse, Maciej Owsianny, Ryan Walsh, Josh Tarini and Christopher Golon.

The women's eight, which was coxed by Katherine Griffin, was crewed by Kelly McDermott, Sheila Marsicovetere, Daisy Carter, Leslie Ann Perez, Catriona Miller, Elizabeth Staub, Kim Winiarczyk and Julianne Roccuzzo.

The men's varsity 4 took third in 6:42.27, while the women's 4 of Meghan Fregeau, Margaret Ajello, Helen O'Connell and Olivia Duckworth finished fourth in 7:46.61.

Both the women's novice 4 and novice 8 took third in their races in 8:10.74 and 7:24.27, respectively.

The Loyola crew teams are back in the water next weekend, April 3, at the Murphy Cup.
