Strong Performance At Murphy Cup Gives Crew Confidence

March 25, 2006

Philadelphia, Pa. - Loyola's crew team rebounded from a sub-par performance in its spring opener with a good showing at the Murphy Cup over the weekend in Philadelphia, Pa.

The Varsity 4 boats set the tone in the first two races of the day, racing very well despite untested line-ups. The women's Varsity 4 rowed with much improved technique and seemed to have the confidence to really go after the final. Stroked by sophomore Lauren Corcoran, the rhythm was good but the boat was unable to push into the final.

The women's varsity and novice 8's also rowed very well and aggressively. The freshmen boat--borrowing the varsity shell after finding damage to their own, was led by Caitlin Haskins, who stroked the boat to a strong finish in the heat, racing bowball to bowball with Temple into the final where they finished sixth overall, just behind Temple's 8 again.

The varsity boat, stroked by Nikki Yaeger showed better stroke length and rhythm than last week, but it was not enough to crack the final. Directed to change lanes at both the start, and mid-race by confused race officials, they overcame these potential distractions to put forth a respectable effort, finishing 12 seconds out of the grand final, but feeling very good about their rowing.

The men's Varsity 4, stroked by frosh Devin Marsicovetere, rowed a completely new line-up and finished second, qualifying for the final, where they finished fifth in a strong field

The men's Varsity 8 was also stroked by Marsicovetere, and although they had a few solid practices earlier in the week, they were unable to parlay them into a grand finals position. They were overpowered by stronger crews from Lehigh., LaSalle and St Joes.

The men's 2v8 qualified easily for the final behind LaSalle, but in the final were too exhausted from previous racing in the Light 8 and the Varsity 8 categories to finish higher than sixth.

"Since I boated them with the main intent of getting solid racing experience for the younger bigger rowers in the boat I feel it was very valuable racing experience," says Head Coach Al Ramirez. "Having a 2v8 that can train against our top 8 is something that Loyola hasn't had in over 6 years, so we taking every opportunity to push these guys."

The men's freshmen 8, racing with some very green athletes, did a great job considering their experience level. They raced confidently and finished just two seconds behind temple but far out of advancing to the final.

The men's Lightweight 8 again lost to St. Joseph's lights but had a wire-to-wire battle with Lafayette. The Greyhounds, who put out their best effort to date, won out by 0.78 seconds. Led by sophomore Dave Rock, the boat contained two juniors, two freshmen and four sophomores.

He lightweight women also had a great race. Led by senior Liz McDowell, the group rowed long and strong. True to lightweight tradition, the crew battled a determined boat from Carnegie Mellon from start to finish staying within half a boat length with neither boat able to break the other until McDowell's oarlock opened up inexplicably, causing the Loyola stern pair to have to temporarily stop rowing about 200 meters from the finish line. They still managed an easy third place, far ahead of the next competitor.

"Overall the day was a success," says Ramirez. "Our athletes proved that they have the abilities to race in tight battles/ Our weekly goal is to have our best races to-date and this weekend we did accomplish that in almost all boats. We look forward to showing continued improvements at the Occoquan sprints."
