CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The Loyola University Maryland men’s and women’s rowing teams opened the 2014 season on Saturday at the Jesuit Invitational Regatta hosted by Saint Joseph’s University.
The women’s freshmen eight started off the days events taking third behind Boston College and Saint Joseph’s. The rookie boat of Serena Rivera, Dakota Corvalan, Carter Lahey, Amanda Fleck, Alyssa Villani , Lindsay Hilliard, Carly McMahon, Sofia Pinheiro, and Colleen Hanna recorded a time of 8:38.1.
The women’s varsity four finished fourth behind the work of Shannon Connelly, Colleen Metzler, Melissa Cortes, Megan Lothian, and coxswain Lindsay Superczynski. The squad recorded a time of 9:13.4, taking fourth-place overall.
On the men’s side, the novice four and varsity four combined to create the Greyhounds’ eighth boat. Emily Arcese, Juan Cadavid, James McCarron, Michael Blume, Cooper Manning, John Turner, Matthew McCarthy , Christopher Keyloun, and Coldel Reynolds took to the water and crossed the finish line in 7:08.4.
The men’s varsity eight closed out the regatta taking fourth in 6:28.1. The men raced the same rowers that scrimmaged Michigan during the Spring Break training session in Georgia, testing out Craig Spicer in the stroke seat. Cox Patrick Flynn, Walter Horan Filip Zigic, Joe Wawrzynski, Theodore Fortier, Robert Moore, Bryan Carney, Craig MacAdams felt confident prior to the race, as the new lineup was arranged to maximize the individual traits of each rower during time in Georgia.
Loyola returns to action on Saturday, March 29, as the Greyhounds travel to Cherry Hill, N.J., for the Murphy Cup on the Cooper River.
