CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland freshman Brian Saramago has been named the Corvias Rookie of the Week, as announced by the Patriot League office Monday.
Saramago, a forward from New Hyde Park, New York, led the Greyhounds to a 2-1 win over Navy in overtime on Saturday, converting a penalty kick in the 93rd minute. Following the Midshipmen’s penalty kick in the 26th minute, sophomore Gabriel Carlsson chipped a shot into the top left corner of the goal in the 46th minute to even the game. Freshman Josh Fawole then drew a foul in the box in the first overtime period, setting Saramago up for the game winner.
The win secured the Greyhounds their first over Navy since 2003 and improved Loyola to 2-0-0 in the Patriot League, marking its best start to conference play since 2009.
For the season, Saramago shares the team lead in goals with classmate Barry Sharifi, as each have netted three. Saramago is also second on the squad with seven points.
After earning a pair of honorable mention performances from the Patriot League, this is Saramago’s first career weekly award.
Loyola will return to action on Wednesday when it travels to preseason favorite American for a 3 p.m. contest.
