ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The U.S. Naval Academy hit .315 and held Loyola University Maryland to a .095 mark on attack, en route to defeating the Greyhounds, 25-18, 25-10, 25-18, in Patriot League action.
The Midshipmen (15-5 overall, 5-3 Patriot League) scored the match’s first six points and never trailed in the first set, taking an early advantage in the match. They then held Loyola (4-15, 1-7) to a -.115 hitting percentage in the second set.
Loyola’s offense improved in the third, and the Greyhounds tied the set at 9-9, but a Sydney Shearn put Navy in front for good on the next point.
Gaby Smith led the Midshipmen with seven kills and was one of five Midshipmen who had four or more. Katie Patrick had six to go with a match-high three blocks.
Ann Ernst paced Loyola with eight kills, while Zoe Pawlak and Haley Puddy each had six.
Loyola returns to action, staying on the road, next weekend when it travels to Lehigh University and Lafayette College for matches on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
