EASTON, Pa. - Freshman Josh Fawole scored his first career goal in the fifth minute and sophomore Mickey Watson added an insurance goal in the 76th minute to get the Loyola University Maryland men’s soccer team a 2-0 win at Lafayette in the Patriot League opener Saturday afternoon.
In the fifth minute, senior Brennan Goldsmith send a short pass out Fawole’s way for him to finish into the left side for the game’s first goal.
Senior Matt Sanchez then turned back Evan Vare’s shot attempt in the 10th minute to keep the Leopards off the board.
The Greyhounds (3-5-0, 1-0-0 Patriot League) clung to their 1-0 advantage until Watson laid out to get a head on sophomore Gabriel Carlsson’s corner kick in the 76th minute. The goal marked Watson’s first goal of the season and second of his career.
For the game, Lafayette (3-5-0, 0-1-0) outshot Loyola, 11-3, but Sanchez came up with three saves for the Greyhounds to record his second clean sheet of the season.
Loyola will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Navy at noon. The game will be the first of a Loyola soccer doubleheader, as the women's team hosts Boston University at 2:30 p.m.
