American University turned back a rallying Loyola University Maryland in the first set and then used a 6-0 second-set run to take full control of the match, defeating the Greyhounds, 25-21, 25-15, 25-8, in Patriot League action Friday night.
The Eagles (18-6 overall, 8-0 Patriot League) led 23-17 in
the first set after a Greyhounds’ attack error, but Loyola scored the next
Haley Puddy and Alisah Cash started the run with a block,
and Ann Ernst put away one of her team-high 12 kills. Megan Mondon then served
an ace, and the Greyhounds (4-14, 1-6) were within three, 23-20, forcing an
Webb sided out for American with a kill, but Puddy responded
with a kill off a right-side slide, thwarting the Eagles’ first set-point
attempt. Aleksandra Kazala, however, ended the set with a kill, putting American
up, 1-0, in the match.
Loyola led early in the second, going ahead 6-4 on a solo
block by Corri Waters, but a service error handed American a point, and they
scored five more points on the serve of Vela McBride. An Aleksandra Sochacka
kill made it 10-6 Eagles before Jane Lukas staunched the run with a Loyola
The Greyhounds got back within three, 12-9 on a Puddy kill,
but American scored nine of the next 12 points.
Kazala led all players with 15 kills, hitting .556 in the
process without an error on 27 swings. Kristen Largay had 16 digs, and Webb finished
with nine kills.
Ernst paced Loyola with 12 kills, while Puddy had seven. Erin Cunningham had 21 digs in the match for Loyola, and Zoe Pawlak added two aces.
The Greyhounds are back in action Saturday afternoon when they travel to Annapolis, Maryland, for a 4 o’clock match at the U.S. Naval Academy.
