Michael Mulieri Highlights Athlete Selections To Honor Societies

April 28, 2008

Baltimore, Md. - Junior golfer Michael Mulieri is one of a handful of current student-athletes chosen to Loyola College honor societies at the close of the academic year. Seniors Tess Drazdowski and Michelle Ernst, as well as freshman Josh Tarini were also named to separate honor societies and programs.

Mulieri has been Loyola's top scorer this season, leading the Greyhounds to the 2008 MAAC Championship with a medalist performance over the weekend. He also has earned MAAC Golfer of the Month honors in each month this past spring and is a member of the MAAC All-Academic Team. Mulieri is one of 14 juniors that will make up the Green and Grey Society in the 2008-09 academic year.

The Green and Grey Society is drawn from groups like the Student Government Association, Campus Ministry and Student Life. Each is nominated by former members and chosen based on their leadership skills and contributions to the college community.

Both Drazdowski and Ernst were inducted to Phi Beta Kappa earlier this month. Drazdowski is a senior swimmer, while Ernst competes as a senior on the women's crew team. Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest academic honor society in the United States and serves to recognize intellectual inquiry, honesty, and tolerance.

Loyola College's Phi Beta Kappa chapter (Epsilon of Maryland) elects each year a small number of seniors and juniors majoring in the College of Arts and Sciences. Requirements for election include outstanding academic achievement and evidence of good character.

Tarini, a freshman member of the men's crew team, has been accepted to the Sellinger Scholars Program. This program is an honors program in business administration. Sellinger scholars are selected in the spring of the freshman year on the basis of academic achievement, leadership potential, and community involvement.

Tarini, Drazdowski and Ernst and Mulieiri continue a long line of Loyola student-athletes who have been recognized and honored for their academic achievement apart from athletic success. While Greyhounds make the Phi Beta Kappa and Sellinger Scholar lists each year, former women's basketball player Jackie Valderas '06 was the last Loyola student-athlete selected to the Green and Grey Society.
