Annual Athletics' Awards Banquet Scheduled For Monday, April 27

The Loyola Department of Athletics will gather at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 27, 2009, for the annual Athletics' Awards Banquet.

Each year, individual and team awards are given to select student-athletes for their achievements both on the playing field and within the classroom.

Parents of senior student-athletes are invited to join the event. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance for $35.

Varsity team coaches nominate student-athletes to a variety of individual awards, with the winner selected by fellow student-athletes and athletic administrators.

Individual awards include:
Ernest Lagna Award: Given annually to a senior female who has achieved a strong academic standing and holds atleast a 3.0 GPA, as well as significant athletic accomplishments. All candidates have made valuable contributions to the Loyola Community.

John R. Mohler Award: Presented annually to a senior male student-athlete who has excelled in the areas of athletics, scholarship and character. This student-athlete also holds a 3.0 GPA or higher. This award is presented in memory of John R. Mohler, Loyola Class of 1950.

Medal of Merit Award: Awarded to a male and female student-athlete who have combined academic and athletic excellence at Loyola.

Leadership Award: Recognize two student-athletes who display the qualities of integrity, enthusiasm, initiative, leadership and physical and moral courage.

Diane Geppi-Aikens Inspiration Award: Presented annually by the Loyola College Athletic Department to an individual or individuals who have overcome obstacles and/or adversity.

Rev. Francis J. McManamin, S.J. Unsung Hero Award: Go to the male and female student-athletes whose hard work and determination help improve Loyola's intercollegiate athletics program.

Academic honor are also given during the banquet. The Team Academic Achievement Award is given to the team with the highest cumulative grade point average through the Fall semester of the 2008-2009 academic year. Also, the male and female senior student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average during their tenure at Loyola College is honored.

Most valuable and most dedicated individuals are announced from each team during the banquet, along with the student service award to an individual who has made significant contributions to the college's athletic department. Also, members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be recognized for all of their hard work.
