BALTIMORE – Colgate University hit .338 points better than Loyola University Maryland and then held off a strong Greyhounds’ charge in the third for a 25-9, 25-11, 26-24 Patriot League victory on Sunday afternoon.
The Raiders (8-9 overall, 4-2 Patriot League) hit .395 in the opening set and .259 in the first two frames, while the Greyhounds had 15 kills with as many hitting errors for a .000 clip. Loyola (4-13, 1-5), however, nearly took the third while posting more kills in the frame than they had in the first two sets combined.
Loyola had 18 kills and hit .234 in the third before Colgate ended the match with a block. The Greyhounds led as late as 23-22 in the third when Zoe Pawlak put away a kill, but Colgate responded with a Jaelah Hutchinson tip for a kill to knot the score at 23-23
Katie Stebbins then gave the Raiders their first match-point of the day with a solo block on Loyola’s left side, but after a Greyhounds’ timeout, Megan Mondon pushed a quick set to Haley Puddy in the middle, and Puddy sided out and tied the score at 24-24.
Colgate was the benefactor of a Loyola service error to garner another match-point, and Kathleen Harris and Taylor Flaherty ended the match with a block.
Harris and Loyola’s Ann Ernst tied for match-high honors with 10 kills each, while Katie Stansbury had nine to go with 18 digs for Colgate.
Four Loyola players had 10 or more digs: Erin Cunningham (13), Molly Werts (11), Mondon (11) and Pawlak (10).
The Greyhounds return to action on Friday, Oct. 14, when they host League-leading American University at 7 p.m.
