BALTIMORE – Loyola sophomore middle blocker Haley Puddy and junior outside hitter Stacey Kazalas combined for 24 kills, but Bucknell used a 9-0 run midway through the fourth set to clinch a 3-1 Patriot League women’s volleyball victory over the Greyhounds at Reitz Arena. Set scores were 25-21, 19-25, 26-24, and 25-17.
The Bison improved to 4-13 overall and 2-3 in Patriot League play, while Loyola fell to 4-12, 1-4
Loyola started out strong, scoring the first seven points of the match, but the Bison rallied to tie the first set at 16-16, and took the lead for good at 22-21 on a Hailey Stout kill. Following a Blake Buchholz kill, the Bison clinched the set on consecutive service aces by Sophie Bullard.
The Greyhounds then controlled the second set. Loyola never trailed after taking a 4-3 advantage on a Kazalas kill. The hosts took their largest lead at 16-9 on another Kazalas kill, and cruised to the 25-19 win.
The third set was tight throughout with Loyola holding the largest lead at 10-6 on a kill by sophomore Alisah Cash, and there were nine ties. The Greyhounds took a 24-23 edge on sophomore Megan Mondon’s kill, but Bucknell fended off match point on a kill by Jordan Walker. A Bullard kill, followed by a Loyola attack error, gave Bucknell a pivotal 26-24 win.
Loyola held a 12-10 lead midway through the fourth set, but a kill by Bullard started a critical 9-0 run that put Bucknell up by a 19-12 count. The Greyhounds didn’t get closer than five points the rest of the way, and Walker’s kill finished off a 25-17 final set.
Loyola was led by Puddy (13 kills) and Kazalas (11 kills). Mondon and sophomore Molly Werts combined for 41 assists, and freshman libero Erin Cunningham led the Greyhounds with 21 digs.
The Bison were led by Bullard, who had team highs of 12 kills and 15 digs. Luz Nagle led Bucknell with 25 assists.
Loyola will host Patriot League foe Colgate on Sunday at Reitz Arena. The match will begin at 2 p.m.
