Loyola University Maryland junior Bri Betz-White has been named to the five-member Preseason All-Patriot League Women’s Basketball Team, while the Greyhounds were picked to finish seventh in the Preseason Poll, as announced by the League office Wednesday.
Betz-White started all 32 games for the Greyhounds in 2015-16, finishing the season ranked 14th in the Patriot League in scoring (10.4 points per game) and 10th in assists (2.4 per game). In addition, the guard from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, had a point in every game, posting double-figures in 16 contests and 20-or-more points in three games, including a season-high 23 points and six rebounds against Lipscomb.
A Patriot League All-Rookie Team honoree in 2014-15, Betz-White was named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team after helping Loyola reach the Championship Game of the Patriot League Tournament for the first time in program history last season. She also earned a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
The Greyhounds are coming off a season in which they tied the biggest turnaround from a previous season for any team in Patriot League history. Loyola recorded a school-record 11 Patriot League wins throughout the season, sweeping five League foes and landing on SportsCenter Top 10 three times
Entering the Patriot League Tournament with a six-game win streak, their longest since the 2011-12 season, the Greyhounds earned a first-round bye before knocking off Navy, 44-42, with a buzzer-beater in the quarterfinal round at Reitz Arena. With a 65-53 upset win over second-seeded Bucknell in the semifinals, Loyola earned its first championship game appearance since the 2010-11 season, when it played for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title.
Bucknell was picked to win the League, totaling 16 first-place votes and totaling 156 points in the preseason poll that was voted on by the coaches and sports information directors who were not allowed to rank their own teams or vote for their own players. Lehigh edged last year’s Patriot League Tournament Champion Army West Point (119 points) out of first place with 120 points and one first-place vote, while holy Cross (111 points) was picked fourth, followed by American (109), Navy (103), Loyola (69), Lafayette (50), Colgate (24) and Boston University (29).
Bucknell senior Claire DeBoer, a two-time All-League selection, was voted the Preseason Player of the Year, while she was joined by American’s Lauren Crisler, Holy Cross’s Infiniti Thomas-Waheed, Lehigh’s Quinci Mann and Betz-White on the five-member All-Preseason Team.
Loyola returns 12 Greyhounds from last season’s team that finished the year with a 16-16 overall record and an 11-7 mark in League play. The Greyhounds will open their 2016-17 campaign on Friday, Nov. 11, when they host Lipscomb at 7 p.m.
