GREYHOUNDS OFFICIALLY LAUNCH LOYOLA LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
Oct. 3, 2013
BALTIMORE - The Loyola Leadership Academy was officially launched Monday night on the campus of Loyola University Maryland. The Academy is a new initiative where Loyola student-athletes have the opportunity to learn in a seminar format leadership skills and strategies.
Two groups of student-athletes worked with Becky Ahlgren-Bedics from the Janssen Sports Leadership Center. She presented the Commitment Continuumtm and provided additional tools for student-athlete leaders to better understand where each person's team and teammates are fit on the scale.
One of the primary goals of the new academy is to develop select student-athletes into stronger vocal and team leaders. There were two seminar sessions held, one for Emerging Leaders and one for Veteran Leaders. Over 50 students-athletes from all of Loyola's intercollegiate athletic programs attended the first of three planned seminars.
The Loyola head coaches also had the opportunity to meet and discuss leadership concepts with Ahlgren-Bedics. The coaches discussed developing student-athletes into stronger vocal leaders and how to continue the leadership training during the course of the year.
"The Loyola Leadership Academy is a commitment that Loyola and its athletic program is making to help develop strong leaders on our intercollegiate athletic teams" said Loyola Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Jim Paquette, "The move to the Patriot League provided us with an opportunity to build a full Leadership Academy, and we feel this will help us build stronger leaders and, in turn, grow in success."
The program will meet again in late October and again in February. There will also be continuing education that is coordinated through the Janssen Sports Leadership Center and Loyola Athletics.
