VOTE IGGY! Loyola Mascot In Final 8 Of Catholic Logo Competition
Oct. 9, 2013
BALTIMORE - Iggy, the Loyola University Maryland mascot, scored a major logo victory on Tuesday, knocking off the fabled Notre Dame Fighting Irish’s leprachan to move on to the Emblematic 8 of Busted Halo’s Catholic Mascotology.
The Fighting Irish’s mascot entered the competition as the No. 1 overall seed, but Loyola took down the South Bend school after beating Loyola Chicago’s Rambler in the first round.
Busted Halo reported this about the Greyhounds' win: "Major upset in yesterday’s Day Two of Catholic Mascotology as No. 1 seed, The Notre Dame Fighting Irish Leprechaun, went down under the paws and snarls of the Loyola Maryland Greyhound. Ouch! This could have something to do with the speed and prowess of the Greyhound, but the more likely scenario has Loyola’s win linked to friend of Busted Halo® and former blogger (and Loyola MD alum),Fr. Tom Gibbons, CSP, who has launched his own social media firestorm to bring in votes for the Greyhound. Either way, well done, Greyhound, for bringing down the most famous and recognized Catholic school mascot of the competition. Now, the Greyhound, (and Tom and friends) must face the formidable Providence Friar, whose profile image makes him look more like a dark lord of the Sith, rather than the friendly, Dominican friar he surely must be."
Today, the Greyhounds’ icon is up against the standard for the Providence Friars.
For Wednesday’s voting, the Loyola athletic department is announcing a Jesuit-school voting block and asking fans to vote for the Canisius Golden Griffin in its match-up with the Iona Gael. Fans are asked to #VoteIggy #VotePetey on Wednesday! Along
Four additional Jesuit schools remain in the balloting, all facing one another in the Emblematic 8. The Holy Cross Crusader is pitted against the Xavier Musketeer’s Blue Blob, while the Fordham Ram faces the Gonzaga Bulldog.
So, along with voting the Loyola-Canisius block, fans are encouraged to vote Loyola's new Patriot League peer, Holy Cross!
